An 18th Century Gold Cased Lodestone

English, late 17th/early 18th century, unsigned, the curved lateral sides of the cylinder barrel are decorated with gold scrolling acanthus fretwork, the flattened top surface is inscribed with seashells, the domed gold screws to either end are embellished with a sexfoil surround which appears again to a central boss beneath, on pivoting bail suspended on twin pillar cradle mounted on a small plinth wooden base, 8 cm tall
