a Holt’s divulsor, English, c.1880, signed 'Maw London' on ivory plate, in nickel plated steel, 34.5cm long with bougie fully inserted; with a cased trocar set, c.1890 by Maw, Son & Thompson, with hydrocoele syringe in ivory, pewter, glass and silver, with trocar and silver cannula (2) [CITES]
Note: Holt’s divulsor is described in Tiemann’s American Armamentarium Chirurgicum page 358. It is in effect a urethral dilator designed to stretch and release a stricture or narrowing of the urethra. The cannula without the bougie would be inserted through the tip of the penis up to or through the point of narrowing. The hollow bougie is then introduced over a central conducting rod, dilating the bore of the cannula as it passes, so releasing any stricture [CITES]
Note: This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.
