Footnotes: a collection of various samples and soundings from the Challenger Expedition in 1875 which was the first significant government-sponsored oceanographic expedition. Specimens from some 350 locations (stations) were brought back and distributed to the world's foremost experts for examination. Specimens were also sold to many microscope slide preparers who sold them under their own labels.
