BERTHA NEWCOMBE (1857-1947)

oil on board 'Young Girl with Marigolds', signed and dated 1890 lower right, 16 cm x 22 cm, in gilt frame.

Newcombe was a supporter of women's suffrage and later became a member of the London Society for Women's Suffrage. She trained at the Slade School and was commissioned to paint George Bernard Shaw, becoming romantically involved with him and becoming a Fabien Socialist. She exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Society of Women Artists, and the Fine Art Society amongst others.
